Parents of Seniors:

We will be having our first "Project Graduation" meeting to begin planning the All Night Party for our graduating seniors.  This meeting will involve developing committees to begin tackling the many duties associated with Project Graduation planning.  Please make every attempt to attend on Wednesday, Oct. 12th at 6pm in the EHS library.  Thank you!

Also:  We will be hosting 3 FAFSA nights for senior parents/students in our EHS library computer lab to assist families with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  Any student pursuing post high school education will need to have a FAFSA application filled out as soon as possible.  New this year:  the FAFSA window opened on October 1st, 2016.  This is a change from past years where it occurred in the spring.  Our FAFSA Workshop nights will be:  Wednesday October 5th at 6pm, Tuesday October 11th at 6pm, and Wednesday October 19th at 6pm.
Hope to see you at one of these workshops!

2017-18 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Available October 1

FAFSA1

FAFSA season is almost here!

New this year:

Students will be able to submit a FAFSA earlier.  Students will be able to file a 2017–18 FAFSA as early as October 1, 2016, rather than beginning on January 1, 2017. The earlier submission date will be a permanent change, enabling students to complete and submit a FAFSA as early as October 1every year.
Students will use earlier income information. Beginning with the 2017–18 FAFSA, students will be required to report income information from an earlier tax year. For example, on the 2017–18 FAFSA, students (and parents, as appropriate) will report their 2015 income information, rather than their 2016 income information.

I am thoroughly excited to share with everyone who will listen that this week, the US News and World Report came out with their ranking of high schools and awards for top high schools throughout the nation. Escanaba High School has received a bronze award in both 2013 & 2015, however, I am pleased to announce that we received word this week that EHS has received a Silver Award and is ranked in the top 100 high schools in Michigan!  EHS is ranked 85th out of 850 High Schools in Michigan.  This is the first time that we have been ranked in the top 100 high schools, so we are thrilled!   If you would like information regarding the background behind this ranking and award feel free to check out:

Congratulations to our 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students for a very successful State Testing week!  Students appeared to be well prepared, were on time and put forth a lot of effort during their testing periods.  Our 9th & 10th grade tried their hand at the PSAT test (practice SAT) for the first time, while our 11th grade students took their first shot at the SAT, followed by the Day 2 Work Keys, and Day 3 MSTEP (Science and Social Studies) tests.  Three days of testing was exhausting for our Juniors, but they were troopers and hung in there until the end.  I am very proud of them and their hard work.  We are all looking forward to a regular daily routine with our state testing done for another year.  If your child was absent for the SAT or Work Keys tests, they will be made up on Tuesday, April 26th and Wednesday, April 27th, 2016.  Thank you to all of our parents for making sure our students were in school on those days, fed, rested, and ready to think!

We will be working with all of our 9th - 11th grade students to set up an account in Collegeboard, as well as Khan Academy to make sure they are ready to see their test results and look for areas they need to focus on in preparation to retake it next year.  We will have more information to follow.  If you would like to begin looking at the Khan Academy site, feel free to go to this link and look around:  https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/sat

SAT Info for EHS Parents and Students:
I am posting the link above to the 4 existing full length practice SAT tests with essay and scoring options.  There is an electronic app called ("Daily Practice for the New SAT") in which students can take photos of their answer sheets and scan them into the app and they will get instant scoring and feedback on their responses.  I am also attaching the link to the pdf copy of the answer sheet for students to use when taking the practice test. (That is what you take the photo of to scan into the app.)
The app is a great tool for daily SAT style questions that students could do on their devices.
There are 4 practice tests that can be done once each.  I recommend taking time to try these SAT style questions, and review areas of strength or weakness in preparation for SAT testing in 11th grade.

(Day 2) Work Keys:  Wednesday, April 13th, 2016

(Day 3) MSTEP:  Thursday, April 14th, 2016

EHS Students making banners for our Special Olympics Pep Rally!
Making signs for each Special Olympics athlete!

So proud of our EHS Student body today as they cheered on our Special Olympians at our pep rally.  I think there were many students and adults without a dry eye in the gymnasium.  It was a highlight of my year.  Thank you students and staff!
